Sandra’s Shabbat Stories

Each Shabbat during the summer, the camp director gets the opportunity to share a Shabbat story with the campers.  It is one of my favorite times of the week, because I am able to spend quality time with the children and impart a story with a moral that I hope that the children learn from and take to heart.  After this summer, I decided to collect some of the stories that I have come across and share them with you. I encourage you to share these stories with your children.  I will be posting a new story once a month.  Story time:

In a land far away, once upon a time there was great poverty: only the rich could manage without great problems. Three of those rich men, and their servants, were traveling on the same road, in a convoy, when they came to a very poor village. Seeing this poverty provoked different reactions in all three rich men.

The first couldn’t stand to see it, so he took all the gold and jewels from his wagons and shared them out among the villagers. He wished them all the best of luck, and he left.

The second rich man, seeing the desperate situation, stopped for a short time, and gave the villagers all his food and drink, since he could see that money would be of little use to them. He made sure that each villager received their fair share and would have enough food to last for some time. Then, he left.

The third rich man, on seeing such poverty, speeded up and traveled straight through the village without stopping. The two other rich men saw this from a distance, and commented with each other how the third rich man lacked decency and compassion. It was good that they had been there to help the poor villagers…

However, three days later, they met the third rich man who was traveling in the opposite direction. He was still traveling quickly, but his wagons, instead of the gold and valuables they had been carrying, were now full of farming implements, tools, and sacks of seeds and grain. He was heading to the poor village to help them out of poverty.

This happened a long, long time ago, but we can see the very same thing happening today too. There are some generous people who give only so that people can see how much they are giving. They don’t want to know anything about the people they are giving to.

Other generous people really try to help others, but only so that they can feel better about themselves.

But there are other generous people: the best kind. To them it doesn’t matter what the other kinds of generous people think of them. Nor do they give in a showy way. Instead, they truly worry about how best to improve the lives of those they are helping. They give greatly of something much more valuable than money. They give their time, their vision and their lives.

We still have time to change to this third, and best, group!

Camp Judaea Cuts Ribbon on Amphitheater

The lake provided a stunning backdrop for the new amphitheater at Camp Judaea in Edneyville as friends, parents, staff and campers gathered Monday to dedicate the new facility.

The amphitheater serves as a tribute to the dedication and vision of several members of the Camp Judaea board.

“It’s not the living room that no one ever uses,” Camp Judaea board member Barbara Extein said. “I want it used morning, noon and night.”

The camp is celebrating its 49th year and is in the middle of an $18 million capital campaign. The amphitheater was the first major project. Camp Judaea also wants to build new cabins, remodel the kitchen and reorganize the layout of the cabins, creating more of a village-like design.

“We are not looking to be ritzy,” board chairman Karen Eisler said. “The cabins are not going to be air conditioned. This is still a rustic camp.”

The camp provides Jewish children a chance to learn about Jewish history and culture, and understand the importance of the state of Israel. They sing songs, participate in camp activities and meet Jewish children from around the country.

The camp operates throughout the summer and is part of a loose network of other Jewish camps in the United States. The population of the camp is 350 to 400 people for both campers and staff.

The amphitheater will be a gathering place for people who attend the camp. The new facility has a large fire pit and is built with stone bricks, many of which were purchased by the campers’ parents.

“It is going to be interactive,” said Michele Burger, chair of the Camp Judaea capital campaign. “There will be performances and plays.”

Camp Judaeans and The Lone Soldier Program

Jared White, a former camper and staff, completed his military service with the IDF last year. While still a soldier, Jared became involved with the Michael Levin Memorial Center for Lone Soldiers in Jerusalem.  He now works there as Director of Programming.  Here is what Jared had to say about the Center and his new job:

The Michael Levin Memorial Center for Lone Soldiers is a very special place.  It was started by former IDF lone soldiers to help future lone soldiers along their path. I have seen our dream come true since we opened the Center last summer. I volunteered with prospective lone soldiers. One of the biggest problems they face is not knowing how to go about it or even understanding what they want to do during their service. What we do here at the Center is talk to them, get to know them, give them the information they need to help them succeed during their service. I feel such a connection to every single one of our Lone Soldiers. There was never a place like this when I served and I cannot tell you how much of a difference it makes in these soldiers lives. We help them find an apartment, make sure they receive all of their rights, or sit down with them for a cup of coffee after their best friend was killed. It doesn’t matter to us if the kid is from Russia, Brazil or Australia; we are here to help. All of the staff here knows all to well what it is like to serve in the IDF without a family. We try and help them with these challenges one step at a time, 24/7, Shabbat and holidays. We are here so lone soldiers no longer have to feel alone.

Jared remembered the young camper, Lizzy Feldman, from CJ. The two became reacquainted at the Jerusalem Marathon when Lizzy, now on Year Course, helped raise support for Lone Soldiers. During her visit home during Pesach, Lizzy spoke at Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase, MD on something unique to Israel. She talked about the IDF and the Lone Soldiers. Lizzy will return from Israel in time to be on staff at CJ this summer.
